Hyperpigmentation

The concern of hyperpigmentation has been prevalent for ages. Early medical texts, as identified by Hippocrates, also talk about pigmentation changes in skin. A study conducted in 2024 reported that the incidence of pigmentation after inflammatory changes, commonly known as PIH or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, is higher in women with darker skin tones. 65% of women experience hyperpigmentation due to acne. Additionally, melasma, a butterfly-shaped hyperpigmentation, is also 9 times more common in women than in men.
While few find freckles and melasma attractive, for many others it’s a matter of distress and leads to a lack of confidence. This cosmetic concern is, however, a symptom of an underlying pathology.

Hyperpigmentation

Different presentations of Hyperpigmentation

  • Melasma – Across Pachouli clinics in Delhi NCR, the occurrence of this skin condition is around 17-18 %. Which is significantly high. Melasma presents itself as dark brown patches around the cheeks or forehead owing to sun exposure, hormonal challenges, or nutritional derangement. This pigmentation is really resistant and often proves to be a nightmare for a physician.
  • Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation — Pigmentation that occurs on the skin after any external injury, or an internal trauma or acne, is known as PIH. This acquired condition is common in darker skin tones, which are skin types between Fitzpatrick 3 and Fitzpatrick 4.
  • Freckles / ephelides – A typical presentation of hyperpigmentation often seen in people living in mountains or those who expose their skin to UVB the most. At Pachouli, we have the most premium and advanced technologies to treat freckles and reduce hyperpigmentation.
  • Solar lentigines, or sun spots and age spots — lentigos, or liver spots, are pigment hyperplasia associated with lasers or sun exposure and can even be genetic.

Can Hyperpigmentation be cured permanently?

Well, the clear answer is no, but then what to expect from the treatment and why to even take a treatment.
